Frequently Asked Questions

Why are TONOSHO metal stamps more expensive?
TONOSHO metal stamps are made for users who care about precision, consistency, and professional-looking alignment.

Many lower-cost stamp sets have small manufacturing variations such as uneven character height, off-center engraving, tilted character faces, or inconsistent positioning on the stamp body. These differences may be difficult to notice when stamping one character at a time, but they become much more visible when several letters or numbers are aligned together.

To achieve more consistent results, TONOSHO uses manufacturing requirements focused on character position, orientation, body dimensions, material quality, and overall consistency.

Can I use the TONOSHO alignment tool with other brands of metal stamps?
Yes.

The TONOSHO magnetic L-shaped holder is designed to work with many different brands and sizes of metal letter and number stamps.

However, the final result still depends on the manufacturing accuracy of the stamps themselves. If the characters are not centered, level, or positioned consistently, the alignment tool cannot completely correct those differences.

For the best results, use stamps with consistent character size, position, orientation, and body dimensions.

Will lower-priced metal stamps work with the TONOSHO alignment tool?
In many cases, yes.

If your accuracy requirements are modest and the stamps are manufactured reasonably consistently, lower-priced stamp sets can still work with the TONOSHO alignment tool.

However, the alignment system may also make manufacturing inconsistencies easier to see. Small differences in character height, angle, position, or stamp body dimensions can become more noticeable when several characters are aligned side by side.

How can I tell if a metal stamp set is accurately made?
A good metal stamp set should have consistent character size, height, position, orientation, and stamp body dimensions.

When several stamps are placed side by side, look for:

  • Consistent character height
  • Centered engraving
  • Similar character size
  • Square and level stamp faces
  • Consistent stamp body dimensions
  • Similar vertical and horizontal positioning

The TONOSHO alignment system can also help reveal manufacturing inconsistencies that may be difficult to notice when stamps are used individually.

Why are very small metal stamps more difficult to manufacture accurately?
The smaller the character size, the tighter the manufacturing tolerances need to be.

With very small stamps, even a tiny difference in character position, depth, angle, or body dimensions can affect the final alignment.

This is why small, accurately made metal stamps require more precise machining and more consistent production control.

Why is the TONOSHO alignment tool sold together with TONOSHO metal stamps?
The alignment tool can work with many brands and sizes of metal stamps.

However, for the most consistent results, the stamps themselves also need to be manufactured accurately.

TONOSHO stamps are produced to specifications designed to work together with the TONOSHO alignment system, helping reduce variation in character position, orientation, and overall alignment.

How many spacing options does the TONOSHO alignment system provide?
The system includes two alignment jigs in different sizes.

Each jig provides four spacing positions, giving eight positions in total. Two of those positions overlap between the two jigs, so the complete system provides six different base spacing options.

Users can also skip positions or use different step intervals to create additional spacing combinations.

Does the TONOSHO alignment system only keep letters straight?
No.

The system is designed to help with both:

  • Straight character alignment
  • Consistent character spacing

Many basic stamping guides mainly help users follow a straight line. The TONOSHO system also helps control the distance between characters, reducing the need to judge spacing by eye.

Is the TONOSHO Anvil Flat Block designed to work with the alignment tool?
Yes.

The TONOSHO Anvil Flat Block is designed to work with the TONOSHO alignment system.

Its built-in clamping features help hold the workpiece and alignment setup more securely, reducing unwanted movement during stamping.

It can also be used as a standalone anvil surface for other metalworking and jewelry-making tasks.

Why can’t I find the L-Holder?
The L-Holder is stored inside the alignment tool for shipping, so it may not be immediately visible when you first open the package.

Please check the alignment tool carefully and follow the setup video.

If you still cannot locate the L-Holder, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
